Business ethics: Change the world

All too often we hear people say that business is evil and a major cause of the many problems of society. Unfortunately, that statement is true in all too frequent cases. That doesn't mean, however, that all business is bad. A few bad apples can spoil an entire barrel. Such is the case in the business world where a few dishonest and uncaring people make all business people look bad.

The good news is that you can do something about the bad reputation inflicted on honest business people by a few scoundrels. You can operate your business from startup to retirement on ethical principles. Honest and open business practices can and should be how you run your company. In fact, I am positive in my conviction that honesty is the best policy. In the long run, nice guys finish first.

Let's start at the startup of your company when you devise your business plan. Begin with a firm statement of your own convictions and principles. These are the cornerstones of how your organization will operate in the present and into the future. For example, you might declare that you will purchase no items that destroy the Amazon rainforest (pictured at the top of the post), or harm or displace indigenous people. You could announce fair hiring practices that include people of every gender, race, age, and physical challenge. You may decide to provide charitable work for the community and to give something back, and then some.

Once these foundation principles are in place, you must devise systems that will put them into action. Your suppliers must adhere to your environmental and human protection goals, or you will seek new sources of goods and services. Your hiring policies will be open and use innovative techniques that don't eliminate candidates. You get involved in community groups that help others succeed and achieve their goals.

Take care of your day to day business activity as well. You conduct your business honestly and provide the best customer service possible. Discuss your ideas and business practices with peers in your industry and outside your regular business circles. Talk openly with customers about your goals and beliefs. While many potential customers might reject the concepts, they will be attracted by your honest business practices. Write about your experiences with your core values on your business blog. The feedback from customers and business associates will help further your goals and enable you to reach and even exceed them.

Business doesn't have to be cut throat competition and a race to the bottom. Working together in strategic partnerships, with other like minded business people, will help everyone achieve success. Your customer base will include many people who are seeking something better in their lives and for the planet as a whole.

Satisfied customers will spread the word about you and your organization by good old word of mouth advertising. Your company will be treated well in blog posts and media coverage. The viral marketing power of blogs and the traditional media will work in your favour, spreading the word on your behalf. Good news is good for the business bottom line as well.

Honesty is the best policy. It pays off in customer and community relations, and it pays off for the world.

Practicing strong business ethics is the ultimate win win for everyone.

Blogging as life changing experience

Blogs can change your life. In fact, if you post to your blog for any prolonged period of time, the blog is almost certain to be the catalyst for some life altering experiences. It's the nature of the blog that's the cause of this success.

When a business adds a blog component to their website, or even uses a blog as a stand alone internet presence, good things happen. The blog makes some important differences in the business. Blogs rank very well as an SEO tool in the various search engines including Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Your regular blog posts are a constant source of fresh, keyword rich content that is like candy to the search engine spiders.

Combined with the free and generous linking activities of other theme relevant bloggers, blogs are a recipe for an SEO powerhouse. Because links from theme and topic related web pages have more search engine ranking power than non-relevant links, blog links are especially strong. The links themselves pack even more punch when the link is right inside the sending blog post. The words on the clickable link line, referred to as link anchor text, are often the most important keywords and phrases for the receiving blog. That adds even more SEO power to the inbound link.

These improved search engine placements are a direct cause of heavier visitor traffic to your blog or static website. More searchers find your now highly ranked blog, and the search engine link clicks the information seeker to your blog or blog enhanced site. That creates more potential business customers and clients for your company. It means more dollars in your pocket.

Blogs are a conversation building medium. By initiating discussions with other business people, and of course with other bloggers, trust is built for your company. As your current and prospective clients get to know you as a person, and not merely as a company name and corporate logo, you become associated personally with your brand. Since a brand is often thought of as a promise, that trust is nurtured by your blog postings. People buy from other people whom they know and trust, and who they believe will deliver on their brand promises. The business blog enhances that trust creating more revenue sources for your company.

Blogs not only build customer relationships, but develop interpersonal friendships as well. The online and and offline meeting opportunities generated by the business blog, or any other type of blog, often translate into lucrative partnerships and strategic alliances. Blogs also create lifelong friendships and have even led to marriages between bloggers. Now that is indeed life changing, to say the least.

It's mind boggling in many ways to think that something as humble as a blog, and very often a free one at that, can change a person's life for the better. By sticking one's toe into the waters of the blogosphere, a new blogger will find almost immediate rewards and benefits. Other bloggers will comment on their blog, and the comments will often be returned. E-mails, telephone calls, and even in person meetings can follow. New relationships and a wider personal and business network is born. Over time those networks and social interactions will grown in size and scope along with the blog.

Start a blog and your business and personal life will never be the same again.

Talk about a life changing experience!

Link lust: Enquiring minds want to know

My good friend Darren Rowse (pictured left) of the professional blogging industry leading Pro Blogger wants a peek into other bloggers' secret lusts. No, he is not peeping into your closets or cupboards, but rather into your innermost blog link hopes and dreams.

Darren wants to know which blogs you would most like to send you a link. After all, linky love is the base on which the blogosphere rotates. Interconnected blogs make the blogging world go around. Bloggers are free and generous link givers and send links out every which way into cyberspace. As a result, blogs are a leading force in online communications and community building.

Sending and receiving links has power in several ways. Links result in more visitor traffic; both for the sender and the receiver. Links are very often returned by the recipient to the donor blog. Links also provide SEO power in the various search engines. As a general rule, the more links a blog receives, the better the blog posts will rank in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. While there are other SEO factors in play, links are a very important component of the search engines' ranking components.

Links are life.

As a result of his study of links and their value, Darren Rowse wants to know which links would benefit your blog the most. The advantage could be in the search engine rankings for your most important keywords and phrases. The benefit could arise from the additional visitor traffic showing up to bulge your traffic logs. More revenue could result through Adsense clicks or additional newsletter subscribers. More links could even be a combination of all of these factors; and more.

After all of that introduction, you are probably awaiting my list of desired links. Well, I really hate to disappoint you, as I value all of my inbound links equally. The size of the blog's traffic or search engine ranking are unimportant. I see incoming links as a privilege and an honour. When someone sends a link to my blog, I always get a tiny lump in my throat. It's truly wonderful to know that someone found one of my posts helpful for them, and by extension, to their blog readership. All links are special to me.

A link from the smallest newest blog is important. From tiny acorns, do mighty oak trees grow. After all, even the household name blogs of the blogosphere had to start from one inbound link.

I appreciate all of my incoming links and I wouldn't trade away them for anything. I value every blogger who links to my posts. They are all gifts from people whom I want to meet in person some day.

My list of link lust consists of bloggers, who are currently strangers, but who will eventually be my friends.

Thanks to all of you who link to my blog. Thanks in advance to those who have yet to link here. I appreciate all of you and your taking the time to link to my posts and my blog.

Show your enjoyment of other bloggers' efforts and link to their blogs today.

Darren Rowse, this link's for you!

Carnival of the Vanities at The Skwib

The 190th edition of the longest running internet blog carnival, the well known Carnival of the Vanities appears at Mark Raynor's wit and satire blog known as The Skwib.

Carnival of the Vanities is the original collection of blog postings, assembling some of the best and wide ranging bloggers on the internet.

This week's Carnival of the Vanities entries include politics, literature, science, medicine, technology, business, and satire.

I have an entry in this week's Carnival of the Vanities as well.

My post is titled "Management By Baseball By Jeff Angus: Book Review" where I discuss how the game of baseball is played out in the open, and the results are wide open for everyone to see. Success and failure can be seen in the boxscores every day, and with the pennant and World Series winners every autumn. Trades are made, players are drafted, free agents are signed for all to see and analyze. For a business, the success and failure are measured in stock prices, balance sheets, and liquidation sales. Baseball has experienced almost every possible situation that any other business can face. There have been huge successes as underdog teams have won the World Series and failures of teams expected to win it all.

To participate in the Carnival of the Vanities, or any of the other blog carnivals, one of the easiest techniques is to use the all inclusive carnival entry form at The Conservative Cat.

Another participation option is to simply e-mail your entry to the new e-mail address:

cotvmail -at- gmail -dot- com

As I suggest elsewhere, hosting and contributing to the various internet blog carnivals is a great promotional idea for your blog.

Next week's edition of Carnival of the Vanities appears at Jay and Deb Solo's business and eclectic blog known as Accidental Verbosity.

In the meantime, head on over to the The Skwib hosting of Carnival of the Vanities and enjoy the posts on offer.

You will almost certainly be introduced to some great new and interesting blogs.

Business ideas: Bloggers as partners

Blogs are a powerful tool for initiating and developing interpersonal relationships. Most discussions of business blogs revolve around building an ongoing discussion with current and potential customers and clients. Often forgotten are the relationships created with other bloggers.

As a blog owner builds up a reputation as an expert in the blog's main topic area, other bloggers start to take notice. In fact, that notice can often turn to admiration. It's very common for bloggers to form mutual admiration societies; each very impressed with the other's posts and ideas. Over time, e-mail, telephone, and in person meetings are the result of this cross reading of blogs. The next logical step is to start a new business together.

Business partnerships require an enormous amount of personal trust on the part of all concerned. Blogging paves the way for that sense of trust and personal knowledge to grow naturally. The time between first reading a blog and the formation of a shared company is much shorter than in non-blog introduction cases. Once again, the business or other form of blog began and nurtured a relationship. This time, instead of the conversation being between business and customer, the talks surround the formation of a new business venture.

All of the business talents necessary for creating and operating a succussful organization are found in the ranks of the blogging community. Everywhere that you turn, a knowledgeable blogger is writing with expert authority, in just the area required by a startup company. As you meet and talk with other bloggers, you will find many people who share your vision, and have personalities with whom you can work. Not every blogger is the ideal partner for everyone else, but there is certain to be some bloggers with whom you will share a special affinity.

Develop an action plan

As an action project, consider all of the potential business ideas that you can create. Write them down on paper. The act of putting pen to paper will almost always help to generate even more business venture ideas. Don't analyze them yet. Simply write everything down as it appears in your mind. There will be plenty of time for judging their individual merits later.

The second part of your action plan involves other bloggers. Write down the names of every blogger with whom you have shared e-mails, telephone conversations, or live meetings. As with the business brainstorming, write down every name without judgement. Sorting out the potential business partners and associates can be done at a later time. Set the papers aside, and leave them alone for at least a day, while you think about other aspects of your life. Fortunately, for most of us, other activities always require immediate attention.

Later in the week, go over your business idea lists and remove the concepts that don't suit your personality or overall business goals. Next, go over the list of potential business partners, and remove the names of those people who may not be right for you right now. Note that a blogger who might not present a current opportunity for a shared venture might be ideal for a future possiblity of collaboration.

Start the plan in motion

Once your list of possible associates is narrowed down, write a very individual e-mail to the selected bloggers exploring the potential for a business arrangement. Make certain that each letter is individualized for each possible business associate. This is no place for the dreaded form letter. The recipient will probably discard that sort of query as spam. Your reputation as a professional person will also be severely marred. Always maintain a professional and businesslike approach. It will be rewarded.

As you would expect, not every blogger with whom you correspond will be receptive to your business proposals. It's not personal. The other blogger may simply not have the time or resources to pursue the opportunity at the moment. That doesn't mean that they won't reconsider your offers in the future.

After some time, and discussion, you are very likely to find a blogger who wishes to establish a startup company. Talk and meet with them and establish the business outline and possible plan. Bloggers are open and willing to talk about ideas. Before too long, a successful company will be born.

As always, the seed of the new tree was planted by means of a blog.
