"As much as we might wish it, our world is not becoming more stable or easier to comprehend. We are entering, in short, a revolutionary age," writes Managing Director at Kissinger Associates, Joshua Cooper Ramo, in his brilliant and worldview altering book The Age of the Unthinkable: Why the New World Disorder Constantly Surprises Us And What We Can Do About It. The author takes the reader on a globe trotting adventure, from the turbulent Middle East to the world of Wall Street high finance, where generally accepted ideas of how the world works are shattered forever.

Joshua Cooper Ramo understands that small events have enormous and unexpected effects far beyond their initial impact. From experiments on the instability of a growing sand pile, and the unpredictable effect of adding one more grain of sand, the author forms a powerful analogy with the the forces at work in the world. Each addition of a single grain of sand to the growing pile increases its instability, but when the avalanche of sand will occur is impossible to forecast. This unpredictability is reflected in asymmetrical Middle East warfare and in individual home foreclosures in the United States. When the avalanche causing event, that changes the familiar worldview takes place, can't be forecast with accuracy despite its certain inevitability.

Joshua Cooper Ramo (photo left) recognizes that the disproportionate effects of small events renders the old school power politics obsolete. The former advantage of superior numbers and technology turned into a liability in the face of an adaptable opponent. Instead of pounding an enemy into submission, the foe changes, adapts to the new environment, and becomes stronger and more resolute. Power politics, as practiced traditionally by Western governments, according to the author, are no longer effective and are indeed counterproductive. The traditional security dilemma of building more arms, resulting in potential enemies also arming, results in increased insecurity. In its place is needed a deeper understanding of national security beyond the simple equation of weaponry.

Joshua Cooper Ramo envisions a world where individuals are empowered to act and think creatively. The failure of Wall Street bankers and of powerful armies to achieve desired results demonstrates clearly the sand pile world at work. Individual actions produce unexpected results far beyond their expected scope. Whether in a village in South Africa where local AIDS patients develop their own treatment programs, a cell in the Gaza where Palestinian guerrillas adapt to Israeli military actions, or a company in Brazil that empowered its workers to create their own jobs and profit centers, the actions of individuals cause unexpected and powerful events to take place. The law of the sand pile is an inability to watch every grain of sand, but that every bit of sand has a profound effect on the whole, works in the emerging world as well.

I very highly recommend the important and idea changing book The Age of the Unthinkable: Why the New World Disorder Constantly Surprises Us And What We Can Do About It by Joshua Cooper Ramo, to anyone seeking to understand how individual actions impact the complex worlds of corporations, national economies and global security in unimagined ways. Moving far beyond traditional corporate management, economic, and security theory, the author presents a compelling argument for individual empowerment and action.

Read the paradigm challenging The Age of the Unthinkable: Why the New World Disorder Constantly Surprises Us And What We Can Do About It by Joshua Cooper Ramo, and never look at our revolutionary age and the sand pile world in the same way again. Instead of looking to traditional authorities, for answers and solutions to national and global problems, the revolutionary power to create positive and lasting change is in the hands of the individual.

Why Customers Really Buy

Uncovering the Emotional Triggers That Drive Sales

By: Linda Goodman, Michelle Helin

Published: Jan 15, 2009
ISBN: 9781601630414
Format: Paperback, 256pp
Publisher: Career Press Inc.

"The motivations customers act on are seldom logical, predictable, or even conscious," write marketing consultants Linda Goodman and Michelle Helin in their breakthrough guide to sales and marketing Why Customers Really Buy: Uncovering the Emotional Triggers That Drive Sales. The authors make the powerful case that buying decisions are based on emotional factors, and how to employ emotional triggers to enhance sales and marketing results.

Linda Goodman (photo left) and Michelle Helin recognize that buying decisions are made by human beings, and as a result, the choices made are based more on emotion than on logic. The authors define an emotional trigger as something that causes a reaction in a person. The event that drives the reaction can be real, or it can even be imagined, but it triggers an emotional response. In the case of buying decisions, the reaction is to purchase the product or service. While difficult to quantify, the authors employ various advanced research techniques to delve deeply into emotional triggers and the resulting human reactions.

Michelle Helin (photo left) and Linda Goodman understand that while the entire advertising industry is built on creating emotional triggers that elicit buying reactions, The advertisers are not the only place where emotional triggers are found. What appear on the surface to be rational economic decisions, including outsourcing, downsizing, and mergers, are very often reactions to emotional triggers in the form of fear of loss or of falling behind the competition. Business thinking has long considered its actions to be based on hard numbers and concrete data, but the authors point out that those human decisions are based on emotional triggers as well.

For me, the two fold power of the book is how the authors present research data to support their thesis that decisions are made for emotional reasons, and how to apply that knowledge to marketing and sales. Despite long standing claims that so-called Economic Man makes all choices based on rational and monetary data, the authors make a powerful case debunking that shop worn argument.

Through advanced quantitative research methodology, the authors demonstrate quite clearly that human reactions are emotional in nature, and not based on logic. The authors describe practical application of their emotional trigger marketing model to generate more sales. Through creating genuine empathy with the needs of the customer, and understanding their emotional triggers, the result is more sales and satisfied customers.

I highly recommend the ground breaking Why Customers Really Buy: Uncovering the Emotional Triggers That Drive Sales by Linda Goodman and Michelle Helin, as a must read for anyone who is serious about how emotions affect buying decisions at the individual level and business decisions at the management level. By better understanding how and why humans make the choices they do, marketers can better meet the needs of customers. At the same time, managers can recognize when their business decisions are being influenced by their emotions rather than hard economic data.

Read the essential book Why Customers Really Buy: Uncovering the Emotional Triggers That Drive Sales by Linda Goodman and Michelle Helin, and learn why your customers really purchase your products and services, and how to create more satisfied customers. By understanding and empathizing with your customers, you can meet those emotional needs that result in true long term customer satisfaction.

The Absolutely True Adventures of Best Friends in Business

By: Kirsten Poe Hill, Renee E. Warren

Published: Mar 31, 2009

Format: Paperback, 224pp
Publisher: Plume

"When you work for yourself, you are a survivor," write entrepreneurs Kirsten Poe Hill and Renee E. Warren in their deeply personal and inspiring book You Buy the Peanut Butter, I'll Get the Bread: The Absolutely True Adventures of Best Friends in Business. With an honesty, and an engaging autobiographical style, the best friends turned entrepreneurs, write of their ups and downs as they opened and operated a successful media relations company.

Kirsten Poe Hill (photo left) and Renee E. Warren share the joys and sorrows of entrepreneurship. Whether cash was scarce, utilities were being shut off for lack of payment, or if the IRS was threatening to close their company, the authors' survival instincts carried the day. With good spirits, and no regrets, the book chronicles the highs and lows that make owning a business a wonderful journey. The hard times serve to make even the smallest of triumphs that much more sweet to savor and enjoy. Told with humor and complete honesty, their story inspires as it instructs, not only about business but about the power of friendship as well.

Renee E. Warren (photo left) and Kirsten Poe Hill started their business as friends, and their friendship endured the worst of time, and formed the true basis of their success. Each of these remarkable women brought her unique strengths to the company, and they covered for each others weaknesses. The title of the book symbolizes the sharing of strengths, and how the whole was indeed greater than the sum of its parts. Writing in first person narrative, each woman lays open her soul, and the love of their friendship sparkles on every page. It's clear that without one another's support, the company would never have survived and prospered.

For me, the power of the book was its intensely personal telling of its two important stories. One side of the narrative tells of the founding and operation of a successful media company. The mistakes and successes of running that organization are described in detail, with an eye to understanding how to create a successful company. The importance and joys of the entrepreneur's journey are only part of the story, however.

The second, and more important part of the book is about the power of friendship. The bond between the two authors, and their mutual support even through their company's darkest moments, form the central core of the book. With that sharing together, whether of dollars or of peanut butter sandwiches, their dream was never allowed to fail or die.

I highly recommend the simply told but ultimately powerful You Buy the Peanut Butter, I'll Get the Bread: The Absolutely True Adventures of Best Friends in Business by Kirsten Poe Hill and Renee E. Warren, to any aspiring entrepreneurs. The story of their trials and tribulations, as well as their victories and successes will inspire other business people to reach for the stars. At the same time, the book shares the power of friendship and the triumph of the human spirit to overcome any adversity.

Read the wonderful You Buy the Peanut Butter, I'll Get the Bread: The Absolutely True Adventures of Best Friends in Business by Kirsten Poe Hill, and discover how something as simple as sharing scarce money for bread and peanut butter could form the foundation of a successful company. Learn how the power of friendship and trust can truly overcome any obstacles on the road to success in any aspect of life.
