When you have passion for a business or a project, it can very contagious to those around you, writes Dayna Steele in her highly motivational book Rock To The Top: What I Learned About Success From The World's Greatest Rock Stars. She goes even further and contends that when passion is combined with hard work, and a little help from your friends, you've found your stairway to business heaven.

Dayna Steele's passion is on every page, as she combines her life story as an award winning radio disc jockey, with anecdotes about famous rock stars. While reaching the pinnacle of her radio career, she learned valuable business lessons from rock music legends including Gene Simmons of KISS, Van Halen, Jon Bon Jovi, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, and many more rockers and music industry insiders. Their stories provide a powerful backdrop to the multitude of business lessons shared in the book. Dayna Steele recognizes that all business is really show business, and the most successful business people are indeed rock stars in their own right.

Dayna Steele (photo left) saw first hand how powerful personal relationships are in the music industry. Fan bases are built through personal appearances, interviews, tours, give aways, and lots of hard work. For rock bands and for business people, networking, public appearances, and maintaining contacts in the media and in the industry are vital to success.

The innovative techniques used by rock stars, to stay in touch with their fans, can be applied to any business. It's about being the rock star in your industry, and understanding that everything is show business and finding your spot at center stage.

For me, the power of the book is its motivational quality. Dayna Steele is passionate about her career, and that love of life sparkles on every page. Fans of the rock bands, whose stories are included in the book, will enjoy the personal superstar vignettes; each one containing some valuable business lessons.

The book has a crucial practical element demonstrating the use of technology, marketing, and networking to boost a company's success. Dayna Steele also points out the importance of family time, and of thanking those around you for their help in building your success. As an added bonus, I enjoyed how each chapter sub-title was the title of a classic rock song that tied into the chapter's business advice. The songs also help to absorb and remember the business lessons.

I highly recommend Rock To The Top: What I Learned About Success From The World's Greatest Rock Stars by Dayna Steele, to anyone who is passionate about their business and their career success. The advice presented, in an extremely entertaining format, makes the book a delight to read. There's nothing like learning business to the sounds of classic rock songs.

Read Rock To The Top: What I Learned About Success From The World's Greatest Rock Stars by Dayna Steele, and bring out the inner rock star success in your business career. Rock on!

Community

The Structure of Belonging

By: Peter Block

Published: May 1, 2008
ISBN: 9781576754870
Format: Hardcover, 216pp
Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Pub

Community offers the promise of belonging and calls for us to acknowledge our interdependence, writes Peter Block in his landmark book
Community: The Structure of Belonging
. Understanding the sense of isolation that grips many members of a fragmenting community, Peter Block offers a positive and practical grassroots based solution for building on a community's existing strengths, for a stronger tomorrow.

Peter Block challenges the existing paradigms surrounding community building, whether it's the size of a local neighbourhood, an entire city, or even on a national or global scale. Instead of looking at community, and seeing the best of all possible worlds, the author's experienced eye recognizes possibilities for a brighter future. At the same time, Peter Block doesn't accept the status quo and the conventional wisdom surrounding leadership and change. Marginalized members of communities should be recognized and welcomed, for the abundant and unrecognized gifts and talents they bring to a community, instead of labeled for their alleged deficiencies.

Peter Block (photo left) presents a practical alternative to the current retribution and entitlement based society. He recognizes that the mainstream belief system is limiting in its approach and in its outlook for the future. In its place, Peter Block offers a community based system that places emphasis on empowering citizens to implement change based on inclusiveness and accountability.

No longer is it enough to leave communities stuck in treating the symptoms of community breakdown. In its place, the author proposes a solution that restores the language of healing, belonging, and relatedness to the conversation. In this paradigm, the individual chooses accountability and personal responsibility for the community instead of having only a sense of entitlement.

For me, the power of the book is its positive and practical message for community building, through personal empowerment. Peter Block shares ideas and techniques for building a community based on inclusiveness, and the understanding that every member of that formerly fragmented society possesses unique gifts and talents.

Instead of concentrating on what a person or the community supposedly lacks, Peter Block recognizes that the supposedly apparent problems, are only symptoms of the deeper issue of the breakdown of the community. The book offers ideas for healing and rebuilding the community into a healthy society by getting the right people together in the right way.

I highly recommend the powerful and empowering
Community: The Structure of Belonging
by Peter Block, to anyone who is serious about community redevelopment through personal empowerment and accountability. The book is for anyone who is willing to take the leap of faith beyond dependence on politicians and traditional leaders, and build their own community that recognizes the human value and contribution of all of its residents.

Read
Community: The Structure of Belonging
by Peter Block, and instead of seeing problems and deficiencies, you will recognize potential, and opportunities for transformation to a restorative society of belonging, based on possibilities, generosity, and gifts.

Jill Lublin: Get Noticed...Get Referrals - Author Interview

Your book Get Noticed... Get Referrals is about getting noticed, but many people are reluctant to promote themselves. How can this reluctance to self promote be overcome?

Jill Lublin: Start with what you are comfortable with then challenge that comfort zone at a rate you feel at ease with. In my book, I share many different methods of how to “get noticed”. See what resonates with you and start there.

Getting noticed means setting yourself apart from the crowd. How can this notice be achieved in a positive way?

Jill Lublin: Build on your uniqueness. Also, I find that today everyone is going so fast that they rarely give their full attention. So distinguish yourself by being completely present, especially in one-to-one situations. When you are completely present, it helps others relax because they know that you are listening to them and hearing what they say.

Every business person wants referrals, but many people are reluctant to ask for referral business, as they see it as intrusive or they are afraid of being turned down. Is there a way to ask for referrals that will get positive results?

Jill Lublin: Most people are happy to make referrals. Just clarify whether money or other compensation will be exchanged upfront. Few things can destroy a relationship faster than misunderstandings and bruised feelings relating to referral fees.

Specifically ask your referral partners if they are willing to give and expect to receive referral fees. If referral fees will be paid, clarify the amounts and how and when they will be paid. When a source and I reach agreement on referral fee terms, I send him or her a confirming email restating the terms. On every subsequent referral to or from that source, I also send an email that states the client’s name, thanks him or her for giving or taking the referral, and confirming the referral fee terms.

People want to help others, and you recommend extending help to other people. How can you help other people, and ask them to help you achieve your business goals?

Jill Lublin: One of the biggest myths is that successful people don’t ask for help. People also think that sources will not share. When people have dealt with you, trust you, like you, and believe in you, they will give you tons of information. They will trust you and share their confidences. They want you to succeed. If they are convinced that you will do a great job for their contacts, they will make your job easier because you will make them look good s well.

Business people are often very busy with day to day routines. Very often, they are working in the business rather than on it. As a result, they lose focus and passion. How can a business person maintain focus, passion, and a positive attitude?

Jill Lublin: Some will disagree with me, but I do believe passion, focus, and positivity can also be learned and increased. Here’s how:

• Surround yourself with active people. Active people tend to be curious and have a wide range of interests. They are usually open, adventurous, and eager to share. As you spend time with them, their love of involvement will rub off on you. They will introduce you to exciting new areas and encourage your quests.

• Be with interesting people. Interesting people can introduce you to stimulating new pursuits that you probably would not have discovered on your own. These new directions can energize you and expand your life. They can help you become more positive and adventurous. Interesting people will also take interest in and support your pursuits.

• Spend time with positive people. Positive people are supportive; they will encourage and help you move forward so you can achieve your objectives. When problems arise, their support will help you to move forward and keep you from becoming discouraged.

• Eliminate negative people from your life. Negative people cannot see the light so they will try to hold you back. Their doubts will get the best of them so they will not provide the encouragement and help you need to succeed. Although it’s important to examine everything with a balanced view, constant negativity is demoralizing and will eventually bring you down.

• Take chances. Nothing of value comes without risk and if you hope to succeed, sooner or later your must take chances. Otherwise, you will remain rooted in place while others pass you by. When you take chances, it can add excitement to your life and make it more fun. It can make your successes sweeter and more complete. When you begin taking risks, it can ease your fears and encourage you to take more chances. If some of the risks you take fail, identify your mistakes, learn from them, and try not to repeat them.

• Enroll in programs. Attend courses, programs, and activities that push you past your boundaries and help you get unstuck. Do something different; break the mold. I’ve taken improvisation courses that made me respond spontaneously and be completely in the moment. I tried physically challenging programs that put me in dangerous situations and forced me confront my fears. Avoid being stagnant. Take acting, singing, or dancing lessons. Learn an instrument, ceramics, or a new sport. Constantly push yourself to learn because those who constantly push lead exciting lives.

Sometimes things go wrong and mistakes are made. How can a business person become noticed as a company that takes positive action on customer concerns and complaints?

Jill Lublin: You can’t anticipate every problem; you can’t always be in control. Problems will arise that you can’t predict or prevent. When things go wrong and mistakes are made act kindly and with understanding. Your understanding could turn that person into a friend, follower, or supporter. However, if you treat mistakes harshly, they will avoid you and tell others how badly you treated them. They certainly won’t do business with you or refer others to you. In the end, business is all about people.

How can a business person become a better listener to the needs of customers, and provide even better service?

Jill Lublin: It’s a process that takes practice.

Here is what I suggest:

• Abandon your agenda and pay attention to your customers’ feedback.

• Focus on listening.

• Let others speak.

• Concentrate on what they are saying.

• Interrupt only when you don’t understand or to indicate your excitement.

• Flow with the conversation.

• Be 100% there.

These steps will make your service ratings soars!

If there were only one thing that a business person should do to become noticed, and get more referrals, what would that be?

Jill Lublin: Be yourself. Build on your assets and your uniqueness because they are really what people want. Clients and customers want you, your special viewpoint or approach; your unique insights or touch, not a weak imitation of someone else. Don’t just be a copycat; find your own voice. Get noticed in your own way; in the manner most natural and comfortable to you. Examine the approaches that others have taken and then follow what feels natural for you. Trust yourself and your instincts.

Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself

Networking and referral based business enable people to work successfully with one another and achieve outstanding results, writes Jill Lublin in her powerful, idea packed book Get Noticed... Get Referrals: Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself. The author considers getting noticed, through tireless self promotion, is the fastest and most powerful way to build your business and profits.

Jill Lublin understands that many people are uncomfortable with the self promotion, that is an essential part, of being noticed by others. She points out that many attempts at self promotion are ineffective, and shares ideas and techniques for becoming more comfortable with garnering notice. On the modern and highly competitive business environment, a business person can't sit back and wait for business to arrive at their door or website. As a result, getting noticed by others, for the right reasons, is necessary for business success. Often, gaining that positive notice is simply being helpful, providing excellent service, and listening to and helping others solve their problems.

Jill Lublin (photo left) provides a powerful step by step process for achieving positive notice that will get referral business for a company. She demonstrates how being a good listener, and being a helpful person who is open and honest, will gain attention on their own.

Once a business person moves past that initial reluctance to use self promotion as a business building tool, she moves the process to higher levels. She shares techniques for attracting powerful media attention, and how to turn that media exposure into more business opportunities. Her advanced self promotion techniques are built around a positive attitude and helping others succeed.

Jill Lublin points out that people want to help others do well in business. At the same time, they are happy to recommend good business experiences to their friends, business associates, and family members. Building strong relationships with clients and customers creates an atmosphere of trust. As a result, satisfied clients are happy to refer business to a company that provides superior service, products, and results. The author shows how to ask for business referrals, in a positive way that encourages enthusiastic recommendations, for a company and its products and services.

For me, the power of the book is the author's development of a step by step process for self promotion that is both practical and effective. The ideas presented for getting noticed and getting referrals are based on honesty, helping others, and building strong personal relationships. These techniques are ideal for any business person who fears self promotion is equated with hard selling and loud negative activity. In fact, Jill Lublin points out, that contrary to the popular myth, bad publicity is not good for a company. She stresses that a business person should attract notice and attention for doing business the right way.

I highly recommend Get Noticed... Get Referrals: Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself by Jill Lublin, for any business person who seeking ideas to attract positive attention to themselves and their business. The book is jam packed with ideas for self promotion that even the most reluctant self promoter can use with ease and confidence.

Read Get Noticed... Get Referrals: Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself by Jill Lublin, and your business will get noticed, and receive more referral business than you ever imagined possible.
