Funny Business by Allen Rosenshine - Book review

Funny Business

Moguls, Mobsters, Megastars, And the Mad, Mad World of the Ad Game

By: Allen Rosenshine

Published: Jun 30, 2006
ISBN: 9780825305399
Format: Hardcover, 277 pp
Publisher: Midpoint Trade Books Inc.

Finding career and business advice from Muhammad Ali, Bill Clinton, and the Mob all in one book is rare. Discovering that every story where the sharing of those sage thoughts is hilarious in itself, is a very rare treat. The advertising industry may be one of the largest and most influential in the world, but it is also a barrel of laughs, and operates in its own off kilter style, according to legendary advertising agency CEO Allen Rosenshine. He shares tales of fun and laughter, blended with superb business advice, in his book
Funny Business: Moguls, Mobsters, Megastars, And the Mad, Mad World of the Ad Game.

Peopled with friends and clients ranging from auto industry legend Lee Iacocca, PepsiCo and Michael Jackson's burning hair, Mayor Rudy Guliani and the City of New York, to a somehow deemed to be not funny Bob Newhart, the book is a name dropping all you can eat buffet. At the same time, the anecdotes told are true, and provide insights into an industry that has to be lived to believe it is real. Behind the famous medicine cabinet ads for Gillette, to the possible accidental ordering a beverage from a client's competitor, are some lessons that business people can learn and use in their own careers.

Allen Rosenshine (photo left) is no ordinary ad man. Heading one of the largest and most powerful advertising agencies in the world, and representing corporations populating the Fortune 100, the author played in the business big leagues. In fact, he became a legend. His household name clients and contacts are also fodder for some major league level advice; presented with side splitting hilarity.

Whether dining out with friends and clients, filming ads for television, or presenting awards at an international advertising event, funny things happen over and over again. The author shares those belly laughs with the readers. Members of the Mob even make a cameo appearance in the book, adding to the layers of texture, and demonstrating the concept that humor can be discovered in any situation.

For me, the power of the book is the technique of providing rare insights into the advertising world, and sharing valuable nuggets of wisdom in a humorous wrapper. Ideas and concepts for creating memorable advertisements, avoiding disastrous business miscues, and working with people from all walks of life are served up on a platter of comedic episodes. Captains of industry, sports stars, movie idols, and even mobsters are presented as all too human; with all of the foibles and traits shared by everyone. The author isn't afraid to kick the base from under more than a few pedestals.

I highly recommend Funny Business: Moguls, Mobsters, Megastars, And the Mad, Mad World of the Ad Game by Allen Rosenshine for its humor and its wisdom. After all, laughter is integral to the joy of our humanity, and makes the world turn much more smoothly. Without some chuckles, the world we share would be a much less enjoyable place.

Read Funny Business: Moguls, Mobsters, Megastars, And the Mad, Mad World of the Ad Game by Allen Rosenshine and learn business ideas and wisdom, as you delight in the foibles and laugh at the pratfalls of humanity.

Instant Income

Strategies That Bring in the Cash for Small Businesses, Innovative Employees, and Occasional Entrepreneurs

By: Janet Switzer

Published: Feb 1, 2007
ISBN: 9780071487788
Format: Hardcover, 310pp
Publisher: McGraw-Hill

Cash is King for any business, writes well known marketing authority Janet Switzer, in her latest book Instant Income: Strategies That Bring in the Cash for Small Businesses, Innovative Employees, and Occasional Entrepreneurs. Even easier, she says, are the numerous, simple to apply opportunities to generate that cash flow infusion almost immediately.

Janet Switzer doesn't just provide theory and motivational talks about building your business. She walks the walk with proven, revenue building tips that create what she calls instant income for your business. Many of the concepts presented are well known to entrepreneurs, while some of the other techniques are applied less frequently. All of the income generating ideas have been demonstrated to work. Janet has used them all herself, and on behalf of her who's who, in the marketing and business information industry, stable of clients.

The book develops the instant income building program in a practical step by step format. As a result, the techniques can be learned, perfected, and used over and over again. Many of the tips are common sense ways of growing a business, while others are less well known, but are powerful revenue producers. Written as a reference book, there are many real life examples of the concepts in action, to accompany the theory and advice.

Janet Switzer (photo left) not only demonstrates the power of instant income generation for entrepreneurs, but also for employees within larger companies. The opportunities and techniques for generating cash for employers, and sharing in the booty as an intrapreneur, is an intriguing idea for employees. The principles of income creation, as presented in the book, for joint ventures and sharing profits are applicable to independent business owners as well.

For me, the power of the book is its practical no nonsense approach to revenue creation. There is no wasted space in the text, and the timeless advice can be used over and over; either separately, or in countless permutations and combinations. Whether the techniques involve customer involvement and referrals, or leveraging the media to best advantage, all of the concepts have been tested successfully by the author.

I highly recommend Instant Income: Strategies That Bring in the Cash for Small Businesses, Innovative Employees, and Occasional Entrepreneurs, by respected marketing expert Janet Switzer, to any entrepreneur or manager seeking to increase the company's cash flow. The proven methods on display in the book can turn your organization into a revenue making machine.

Read Instant Income: Strategies That Bring in the Cash for Small Businesses, Innovative Employees, and Occasional Entrepreneurs by Janet Switzer and boost your company's cash flow to unimagined heights, and then apply the advice all over again, for even greater results.

Paul Gillin: The New Social Media - Blog Business Success Radio

blog radio

Social media expert and blogger Paul Gillin, author of The New Influencers A Marketer’s Guide to the New Social Media reveals how ordinary people are changing the rules in media and marketing and how you can share in it to boost your company's success, as my internet radio show guest on Blog Business Success; hosted live on Blog Talk Radio.

The show airs live on Thursday, July 5, at 8:00 pm Eastern Time; 5:00 pm Pacific Time.

Paul Gillin describes the rapid and fundamental changes taking place in marketing and within the traditional media. You will learn:

* What dramatic changes are occurring in how products are marketed

* How the influence of the traditional marketers is declining

* Why the mainstream media is in a decline and why social media is on the rise

* How ordinary people are taking control of the media and marketing message

Paul Gillin (photo left) has chronicled the information technology revolution since the dawn of the PC era. He joined Computerworld as a staff writer in 1982 and drove the leading newsweekly's software coverage beginning in mid-1983. In 1985, he signed on as senior software editor at PC Week, covering Microsoft, Lotus and others aspiring industry leaders. Following a brief stint as founding news editor at Digital Review, he returned to Computerworld in 1987 where, as Executive Editor, he helped guide the publication's agenda beyond the mainframe world and into the broader realm of corporate computing.

In 1999, he took a risk on the dot-com world, leaving behind a staff of 70 and a budget of $7 million to become the sixth employee at a venture-funded startup called SearchHiTech.com. The company, which was soon renamed TechTarget, was building a network of Web portals for IT professionals, each site focused on a narrow technology discipline. Paul defined the editorial model for TechTarget and hired a team of more than 60 editors. Over the next six years, he engineered the editorial transition of TechTarget into a leading source of original news and technical advice. The network now consists of more than two dozen websites, dozens of events and four magazines.

TechTarget became the fastest-growing media company in the IT market, achieving profitability in 2002 and $48 million in annual revenue two years later. During that time, Paul played a key role in company strategy as the company launched new sites, built its conference business and expanded into print publishing and custom events. He most recently served as publisher for divisions encompassing nine TechTarget websites and two conferences.

Paul's career has spanned nearly every aspect of editorial operations. In addition to writing hundreds of articles, he has edited several print supplements, interviewed the most prominent industry leaders, launched and nurtured successful events, traveled worldwide and spoken at scores of conferences and user group meetings. He's appeared on radio and TV programs around the world and have been interviewed hundreds of times by reporters seeking perspective and clarity on technology issues.

The New Influencers by Paul Gillin - Book review

The New Influencers

A Marketer’s Guide to the New Social Media

By Paul Gillin

Foreword by Geoffrey A. Moore
ISBN 1-884956-65-3
Hardcover 272 pages

Conversation marketing based on developing relationships and peer discussion are replacing the more traditional mainstream marketing techniques, writes Paul Gillin, in his important book The New Influencers: A Marketer’s Guide to the New Social Media. These new social media, ranging from blogs to podcasts to YouTube, are changing the rules of how buying decisions are made today. Anyone in marketing, who is not paying attention, will be left behind.

Paul Gillin says the old rules of marketing products and creating advertising and public relations campaigns no longer apply. As the demographics of the buying public move toward the rising youth tide of Generation X and Generation Y, so too must the marketing message to capture their wallets. Younger consumers are well versed in the internet in general, and social media in particular.

Whether it's an iPod, instant messenger, or a community based site like Facebook or MySpace, these potential customers are turning their backs on traditional media in droves. To get their attention, marketers must not only change their message, but also their delivery channels. Younger consumers listen to marketing messages, but they are getting them from different media sources than those of previous generations.

Paul Gillin (photo left) makes some powerful observations about the power of the blogosphere and the various social media sites. Not only are these citizen based publishing and broadcasting outlets providing opportunities for fresh voices, but entirely new spheres of influence are resulting from them as well.

Many leading bloggers have large audiences. The conversational basis of blogging, and the development of relationships through interaction, spreads the influence of individual bloggers far and wide. Social media users hold almost unlimited marketing power and influence and many companies are already taking notice of the sea change.

For me, the power of the book is the description emerging structure evolving in the blogging community and in social media in general, and how it is causing a marketing revolution. Without formal laws and regulations, bloggers have developed a strong peer supported code of ethics and practices. As a result, the conversations created are authentic and transparent, leading to powerful marketing opportunities, as well as potential disasters. Bloggers are not likely to be gamed and their readers are not likely to fall for traditional marketing tactics. Conversation, peer discussion, and interactivity are the keys, and one sided messages are not going to work any longer.

The New Influencers: A Marketer’s Guide to the New Social Media by Paul Gillin is one of those landmark books that has everyone talking and for good reason. The book is an important contribution to discussions of the sea change in marketing and public relations techniques. The democratization of publishing and broadcasting enables fresh, and previously unheard voices into the mainstream. With those voices and their new and constantly evolving delivery channels, marketing and public relations will never be the same again.

I highly recommend The New Influencers: A Marketer’s Guide to the New Social Media by Paul Gillin for anyone who wants to explore the leading edge of the new social media revolution.

Read Paul Gillin's book The New Influencers: A Marketer’s Guide to the New Social Media, and learn how your business can take advantage of the shifts in marketing influence, taking place right before your very eyes.
