An epidemic of irrelevance has brought once proud companies to their knees, writes author Tim Manners in his timely and thought provoking book Relevance: Making Stuff That Matters. The author's solution to the malaise of irrelevance is a return to a marketing focus on solving problems and helping people live happier lives.

Tim Manners understands the timeless approach of being relevant to the needs of the consumer is also the most effective marketing technique. Many of the fad marketing concepts that have appeared in recent years have done more harm than good. For the author, marketing to people as people, instead of demographic profiles, is essential to understanding relevance. Marketers who place people in boxes do a disservice to their customers as well as to their products. People want to be understood as individuals, and their problems and needs addressed with respect.

Tim Manners (photo left) understands that companies investing in advertising, rather than creating products and services that meet real world needs, are seeking a quick fix. The author considers pressure on companies, from Wall Street investors to produce stronger quarterly numbers, to be one of the reasons for spending on advertising. Because product development is more long term, the rapidly becoming irrelevant advertising industry is looked upon as a quick fix solution. Instead of wasteful spending on advertising, Tim Manners considers creating more relevant products and services will take care of the marketing problems all by itself.

For me, the power of the book is its direct approach to marketing through creating and developing products and services that are relevant to the customer. Serving the needs of the customers, and solving their problems in ways that make their lives easier and happier, works for many companies. The book contains many real world examples of relevant products and services that are profitable. The many interviews with successful marketers, as they discuss the power of relevance in the marketplace are crucial to understanding the book. Instead of viewing people as mere demographic statistics, relevance places people back into the forefront of marketing.

I highly recommend Relevance: Making Stuff That Matters by Tim Manners, to anyone seeking to discover the relevance within their own brands. Business people who are serious about creating products and services that matter to real people, and marketing them effectively, must understand the vital importance of relevance.

Read Relevance: Making Stuff That Matters by Tim Manners, and start creating products and services that matter, and discover marketing to people rather than profile groups. Like the case studies described in the book, the marketing success of a company that cares about relevance, will be phenomenal.

Journalist, and author of the important and thought provoking book OBD - Obsessive Branding Disorder: The Illusion of Business and the Business of Illusion, Lucas Conley examines branding from a contrarian and skeptical point of view. He asks if obsession with brands may be doing a company and its customers more harm than good and if there may be better ways to interact with customers.

Lucas Conley is my internet radio show guest on Blog Business Success; hosted live on Blog Talk Radio.

The show airs live on Thursday, November 27, at 8:00 pm Eastern Time; 5:00 pm Pacific Time.

Journalist, and author of the important and thought provoking book OBD - Obsessive Branding Disorder: The Illusion of Business and the Business of Illusion, Lucas Conley examines branding from a contrarian and skeptical point of view. You will learn:

* What Obsessive Branding Disorder really means

* The limitations of branding as a business strategy

* How the use of branding is often a panacea for other business problems

* The future of branding as a marketing tactic

Lucas Conley (photo left) is an experienced journalist, and writer with Fast Company magazine, with an eye for stories that change how we see the world. Widely published in a number of fields, his work has appeared in The Boston Globe, SPIN, and ESPN: The Magazine, among other publications.

At the Atlantic Monthly, where Conley began his career, he spent a year-and-a-half working alongside award-winning investigative journalist William Langewiesche, reporting on stories like the recovery operation at the World Trade Center. Conley's reporting took him from the collapsed subway tunnels beneath Manhattan to the eerie dust-entombed offices high in the neighboring towers, abandoned and frozen in time for months after the collapse. Nominated for a national magazine award, the resulting three-part series, "American Ground Unbuilding the World Trade Center," was published as a book in late 2002.

As a staff writer and correspondent for Fast Company, Lucas Conley has searched for stories that go beyond trends, revealing the passions and challenges of our lives at work. Since 2002, he has followed two Manhattan CEOs as they relaunched their investment firms after losing half their employees in the World Trade Center.

He has traveled out into the wooded hills of New Hampshire to understand how composers, poets, and artists living in a secluded century-old art colony cultivated creativity; and he has profiled the world's leading management consultant on the eve of his return to the business world, after spending three years away from the corporate life, running a mission for his church.

Disrupting Class by Clayton M. Christensen - Book review

Disrupting Class

How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns

By: Clayton M. Christensen, Michael Horn, Curtis W. Johnson

Published: June 6, 2008
ISBN: 9780071592062
Format: Hardcover, 288pp
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Professional

"Schooling can and should be an intrinsically motivating experience", write authors Clayton M. Christensen, Michael Horn, and Curtis W. Johnson, in their groundbreaking book on the power of disruptive innovation on transforming learning, Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns. The authors apply the business technique of disruptive innovation toward changing the way schools teach and how students learn information.

Clayton M. Christensen, Michael Horn, and Curtis W. Johnson recognize that schools have been assigned many, often conflicting and contradictory roles, by society. As a result of these many demands, schools are forced to apply their uniform teaching techniques to a widely diverse group of students. The authors demonstrate that all students learn information in different ways, and those learning styles are not always compatible with the techniques employed to teach the various school subjects.

Clayton M. Christensen (photo left), Michael Horn, Curtis W. Johnson suggest that the change management system of disruptive innovation be employed, to overcome the deficiencies in teaching techniques, and to provide instruction in courses that are not part of the curriculum. The authors recommend that the power of computers be harnessed as a disruptive technology, in a different way from their current use, in the classroom setting.

Disruptive innovation, according the authors, takes place in a marketplace where no product or service exists. Since there is no competition, in the form of a paid teacher for many less popular subjects or those lacking in smaller schools, computer taught courses can fill that void. Instead of being seen as dislodging teachers, student focused computer driven courses would widen the course options available in a school.

For me, the power of the book was the approach to improving schools and education using the concept of disruptive innovation. Drawn from the world of business, the disruptive technique provides a fresh way of examining how to create better schools, and provide more opportunities for students. The recommendation of using computers in an entirely new way, as online instructors with many different teaching methods, is a powerful one. The concept works very well for pupils, who learn subject material in ways different, from the dominant learning pattern for a given course. Individualized teaching, geared to a student's personal learning style, enhances the ability of that student to master the course.

I highly recommend Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns by Clayton M. Christensen, Michael Horn, and Curtis W. Johnson, to anyone serious about making real and lasting improvement in the field of education. The use of disruptive innovation techniques, in any school setting, can successfully change the dynamic of how students are taught, and how they learn their class material.

Read Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns by Clayton M. Christensen, Michael Horn, and Curtis W. Johnson, and develop a more student centered approach to education, while dispelling the popular myths that hold back innovation in the schools. Instead of talking about educational problems, readers can employ the powerful techniques of disruptive innovation, for facilitating change and creating real innovation in education.

Why is Everyone Smiling?

The Secret Behind Passion, Productivity, and Profit

By: Paul Spiegelman

Published: May 14, 2007
ISBN-10: 193328580X
ISBN-13: 978-1933285801
Format: Hardcover 224 pages
Publisher: Brown Books Publishing Group

When you treat your people like true contributors, it does the business tremendous good; when you focus your business on solid values, it benefits both the community and the economy, writes Beryl CEO Paul Spiegelman in his practical guide to building an ethical business Why is Everyone Smiling?: The Secret Behind Passion, Productivity, and Profit. The author suggests a new business model based on ethics, innovation, good customer relations, and developing a loyal group of employees.

Paul Spiegelman recognizes that passionate employees provide higher levels of productivity and greater profits. That basic premise, based on treating employees well, has been lost on many modern businesses. Instead of considering happy, committed employees to be a company's greatest asset, they are very often treated as a disposable expense. In markets where the products and services are difficult to distinguish, superior customer service provided by happy, motivated staff can set a company apart from its competition. Even in commodity industries, a strong brand recognition can be built by loyal employees who love their jobs.

Paul Spiegelman (photo left) recognizes that basic respect for humanity, whether the customers or the employees who serve their needs, is a powerful force for profitability. Motivated employees who go that extra mile for their clients build enduring customer loyalty. Long term customers are often powerful brand evangelists recommending their great customer experience to others. The passion demonstrated by happy staff members translates into enhanced productivity and improved profitability. A virtuous cycle results from loyal staff members who create loyal customers, who in turn contribute to a stronger company bottom line.

For me, the power of the book is the author's understanding that happy employees are productive workers. Along with this common sense idea, the book provides the practical techniques for building a company brand based on passion and loyalty. Empowering employees, and helping them to build their careers within the organization are seen as investments that pay off in the long term. Along with those happy, motivated employees comes an improved company culture based on value and excellence. The end result is a stronger, more profitable business, that can prosper in any economy.

I highly recommend Why is Everyone Smiling?: The Secret Behind Passion, Productivity, and Profit by Paul Spiegelman, to anyone who wants to build a positive company culture centered on loyal, passionate employees. Customer service begins with leadership that recognizes and then demonstrates the importance of good customer relationships, and who passes those values on to the staff. When the organizational culture is one of valuing employees and of customer satisfaction, a strong profitable brand is the end result.

Read Why is Everyone Smiling?: The Secret Behind Passion, Productivity, and Profit by Paul Spiegelman, and turn a mediocre workplace into a spectacular place to work, staffed by happy motivated employees. Your company profits will soar along with the commitment to passion for doing something worthwhile.

Judy Davids (photo left) was 42 when she picked up a guitar for the first time and decided to start a rock band, or make that, a “mom” rock band. Surprisingly, the one thing in her life that she didn’t consider herself to be an expert at made her famous. The Mydols, her band of four Midwestern housewives/mothers drew the attention of the national media, and soon she found herself in the pages of the supermarket tabloid The Sun, whilst shopping for Lunchables.

Davids has appeared in People Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Post, The New York Daily News, The London Times and Making Music, to name a few. She has been interviewed on numerous radio stations across the United States including the nationally syndicated Mitch Albom Show. Rock Star Mommy

My Life As a Rocker Mom

By: Judy Davids

Published: April 1, 2008
ISBN: 9780806528984
Format: Paperback, 194pp
Publisher: Citadel Press

"I decided I was going to be a rock star", writes guitarist Judy Davids of The Mydols, in her inspirational and rockin' book Rock Star Mommy: My Life As a Rocker Mom. From soccer mom to rocker mom, Judy Davids shares her dream of forming a rock band with her friends, and along the way teaches some crucial lessons in business and in life.

Judy Davids followed her unlikely dream of learning to play rock guitar, and inspiring her other suburban housewife friends, to grace the punk rock stage. Instead of letting obstacles, like not actually being able to play music stand in her way, the author rocked on to music fame. Employing the promotional techniques learned in her career, school activities, and as a mother, Judy Davids organized the band like a school science fair. The result was an underground punk rock success story.

Judy Davids (photo left) and The Mydols didn't achieve overnight success. Instead, they learned their music, overcame their initial stage jitters, and learned to rock the house. From selling t-shirts, with their husbands at the merchandise table, to going on tour, the band kept their dream alive. Their mistakes provide valuable lessons, in never letting go of your dreams, for anyone in any walk of life. In breezy and often hilarious prose, the book takes the reader on the magic tour bus from basement birthday shows to national notoriety.

For me, the power of the book is its inspirational story combined with practical business ideas for achieving success. The Mydols are a success story that should never have happened, yet they lived their punk rocker dream, despite the odds. Through hard work and determination, combined with savvy guerrilla marketing techniques, the band became a phenomenon. If a rock group of soccer moms with little musical experience, can get their name in lights, then following dreams can become reality for anyone.

I highly recommend Rock Star Mommy: My Life As a Rocker Mom by Judy Davids, to anyone seeking inspiration for following even the most outrageous dreams. The author demonstrates how no obstacle is to great to be overcome with determination and a will to succeed.

Read Rock Star Mommy: My Life As a Rocker Mom by Judy Davids, and discover the joy of chasing your dreams, and not worrying about the roadblocks. With creativity and inspiration, The Mydols succeeded beyond even their members' wildest dreams. Their story is one of inner strength, personal conviction, and not worrying about the laundry.

Sharing a meal with someone will change forever your relationship with that person, writes business relationship expert Robin Jay in her practical and entertaining book The Art of the Business Lunch: Building Relationships Between 12 And 2. From choosing the restaurant to proper dining etiquette to closing the sale, the author shares insider secrets to developing friendships and more clients through breaking bread together.

Robin Jay understands that people prefer to do business with people they like and trust. As she points out in the book, the fastest way to creating and nurturing an ongoing business relationship is through sharing lunch. Along with the business possibilities of lunch, the author points out that lunches have additional benefits. Scheduling a luncheon meeting on a calendar provides a busy, and often over worked executive with something to look forward to in a hectic day. Being associated with an enjoyable lunch leads to friendships that extend beyond the office walls, and enhancing the quality of a person's life.

Robin Jay (photo left) has shared thousands of business lunches with countless clients, and increasing her sales volumes and income in the process. Her experience with dining for business demonstrates the power of business lunches. At the same time, she shares many of the pitfalls and potential mistakes that await the careless diner. As with all networking and sales presentations, Robin Jay emphasizes the importance of the right clothing, grooming, and professionalism. Not only is there personal value to business lunch, but there is also the opportunity to help unemployed friends with their networking skills. The author recognizes the power of generosity and sharing for enhancing people's lives.

For me, the power of the book is its practical and entertaining approach to business lunches. Robin Jay leaves nothing out of the book, that the business person needs to know, about achieving success at the restaurant table. The book also shows clearly the power of business lunches for increasing sales. By enhancing personal relationships, and by strengthening networking efforts, the author moves beyond the table to boosting the company's bottom line. The goal of the business lunch is to build sales, and Robin Jay shows how restaurant based meetings deliver on that promise.

I highly recommend The Art of the Business Lunch: Building Relationships Between 12 And 2 by Robin Jay, to any business people seeking an effective and enjoyable way to increase their sales. By sharing in the business lunch, relationships are build, trust is enhanced, and more sales are the result, over the short and the long term.
