Directory submissions: SEO and traffic builders

Submitting your blog or website, to the many internet directories, is a fast and easy way to multiply your SEO efforts and build visitor traffic. Directory links add link popularity value to your blog or website for SEO purposes. Many internet searchers still use directories to find sites on the web.

The number of inbound links to your blog or website is part of the search algorithm that the search engines, including Google, Yahoo, and MSN Search, use to calculate their search rankings. That means you, and where your site ranks for searches for your most important keyword phrases. The more incoming links, the better. They all have some value. They all add up to better search engine optimization.

While internet directories are thought by many searhers as not having the popularity or use of years past, they still send traffic to your blog. Check your own visitor traffic records and you will see some referrals from web directories. New users of the world wide web are being added every day. Many of those new web surfers are not familiar with search engines. They often find directories first. If your blog or traditional website is listed in those directories, those new information seekers can find you.

Unlike search engines including Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, and Ask.com, internet directories require you to submit your blog or site to their listings. You never need to submit to search engines as they will find you on your own. That is an important distinction, and one for you to remember. Directories and search engines are not the same thing.

Many web directories will include your site submission automatically. Other directories will visit your blog or website for approval. That approval process is not always automatic. If your blog is not part of their overall directory theme, it may be rejected. For example, submitting a fashion site to a home improvement directory will end in rejection, in all probability. On the other hand, if your site is rejected, wait at least two months and submit again. A second submission might find more success.

Here is a list of internet directories taken from a list developed on search engine optimization forum SEO Chat. I am not familiar with all of the listed directories, and not all of them are likely to be free for submissions. On the other hand, every one of them that includes your blog or site adds an inbound link right back to you. You benefit in the search engine rankings and with potential new visitor traffic.

If one directory is not suitable to your site's needs and themes, move to the next one and submit to that one. There are pleanty on the list, so at least a few directories will be useful for your blog or website.
